Seminyak vs Canggu: Which Should You Stay In?

Seminyak or Canggu? An honest comparison of Bali's two most popular beach areas — vibe, beaches, prices and who each suits.

Seminyak and Canggu sit right next to each other on Bali's south-west coast, and they're the two areas most first-timers weigh up. They're only about 20–30 minutes apart but they feel quite different. Here's how to choose.

The quick verdict

  • Choose Seminyak if you want polish: designer villas, the island's best restaurants, upscale beach clubs and everything walkable.
  • Choose Canggu if you want laid-back: surf, cafés, a younger crowd, co-working, and better value — spread out among the rice fields.

Beaches

Seminyak's beach is a wide golden strip, brilliant for sunset drinks (though the surf makes it better for walking than swimming). Canggu's beaches are black volcanic sand with more consistent surf — it's one of Bali's best areas to learn or improve.

Food and nightlife

Seminyak wins on range and refinement: this is where Bali's best restaurants and glossiest beach clubs are. Canggu counters with the island's densest café and brunch scene and a more relaxed, sundowner kind of nightlife.

Price and who each suits

Canggu is generally better value and rewards longer stays — the café/co-working culture suits digital nomads. Seminyak costs more but puts everything on your doorstep, which first-timers and couples tend to prefer.

Why not both?

They're 20–30 minutes apart, so plenty of people split a trip: a few polished nights in Seminyak, a few relaxed ones in Canggu. See our Seminyak guide and Canggu guide, or the full where to stay in Bali overview.
